I was given TDV Global Underground discs in 1995? At the time it was too much for me. Two years later I started listening to it and it was just epic. He has a great ear with some amazing choices of beats. One of the things I enjoyed was the lyrics/ rap that would go one in the mixes. Other than the Shaman I was not hearing that at the time. He has played a huge influence in my musical taste to date. I was very sad to hear he passed. Just wanted to give props and thanks where it is due.

It hardly seems possible that it's been ten years already since the beauty and the joy that Tony was was taken back from us, yes I am mad and yes as I write this I am trying to fight off tears in my eyes. I never had the pleasure of meeting him although when he died and I sent a letter to the address on radio one I recieved a personal thank you card from his mother.
My knees are still suffering ten years later long after I've hung up my dancing boots after many such nights of madness but it was always Tony who was our favourite, the DJ's DJ, everyone of us who hadthe honor of dancing to your music will never forget you and we all thank you for everything you gave us.
Rest in peace beautiful boy

In the mid to late 90's I was fortunate enough to discover Tony de Vit whilst managing a nightclub in Worcester, England and so booked him for an evening on the decks - my God! - the place was packed out and so at the end of the evening decided to ask him for his autograph, to which he obliged and I still have it to this day - I definately was one of the fortunate. RIP Tony - You made a difference!

when my dj friend introduced me to the new sound. i remember how within a week i had bought my first pair of decks and spent every penny i owned on import records, how we nicknamed tony de vit the wizard and spent hours practising mixing. you truly were our source of inspiration and our hero. my friend gave up djing shortly after you passed away. we knew all the talk about going to england to see you perform now forever would remain just talk. after all we were only seventeen and england was very far away. i still have my decks and records though. and when i play them i do it with the enthusiasm of a seventeen year old who has just found the meaning of life. the feeling your music gives me can't be described in words tony, thank you for letting me experience that.
oh dear, i'm this close to crying now! you will never be forgotten tony, not even up here in the arctic snow. rest in peace!

On a barmy hot summers night an eighteen year old boy fell by chance into Amnesia in Ibiza. The night was to change him for ever. For towering high in the air at the decks that night was Tony de Vit, doing what he does best. After experiencing 'E' for the first time the boy took to the highest podium opposite the great legend of hardhouse music and danced with all the energy, passion and love a kid can.
That boy was me. That night changed me forever. Thank you Tony. RIP

I started listening to dance music in 1996, this was music like ministry of sound and gatecrasher, but in 1998 i heard a track by Tony De Vit called The Dawn,it was produced by Tony and Paul Janes and this track made my day. It was a classic track and still gets played today. Then i heard more of his tracks and i really liked his hard dance style of music. If he was still alive today i am sure that dance music would be hard fast and furious. Tony De Vit is A legend of dance music and will be remebered forever REST IN PEACE Mr De Vit.

As a regular at Trade I enjoyed many of Tony's sets at Turnmills on Sunday morning. I have very fond memories of that period, they were the best clubbing experiences of my life and it was Tony's music that was the soundtrack to it all. Trade was an excellent club before Tony's arrivial but with him on board it really took off. He poineered the hard house sound; back then it wasn't called 'hardhouse' it was just simply know as 'Trade music' and that is because no where else was playing that type of sound. He made the gay scene listen, the straights listen and then the world.
Hard house is now a dirty word and I often wonder if that would have been the case if Tony was still alive. I miss his contribution to the now rather dull music scene, his records always made an impression and often gave me goosebumps. They had a distintive sytle: bouncy, energetic, often hard, sometimes camp. He was a maverick and his records were way ahead of their time, if you hear a De Vit record in a club today it still tears the place up. He was also excellent on the decks and knew how to build a atmoshpere, just listen to Trade Vol 1 it is a good example of how he would build a set then peak it on a top record - in this case it is Lets Rock by E-Trax . How many djs do you know who do that these days?
He is sorely missed by thousands of friends and fans and I truly belief that if he was alive today the music and club scene would be a more exicting place.
Happy birthday Tony! I shall certainly be at Trade on Sunday morning at the TDV memorial party. See you there.

5 Years to the day since tony passed away, and he's still terribly missed. Tidy's memorial gig at the rather apt location of the nightingale in birmingham was a roaring success. I have just received the new remix album released on tidy, and it captures the essence of trade and the whole de vit sound perfectly. Anyway, still thinking of ya tone.

May Tony De Vit rest in peace forever, his tunes and remixes are some of the HIGHEST quality and still today i enjoy them. The world as we know it misses Tony, he was a legend and dearly loved by me and several friends of mine.
i started my own memorial from my school called 'R.I.P - T.D.V'...i got several signatures from Tony followers like myself..there are plenty of people who miss him besides me and i am sure there are MANY people throughout the world who miss him and all of the tunes that could have been.
a couple of my personal favourite songs/remixes are as follows: -I Don't Care by Tony -The Dawn by Tony -Cygnus X - The Orange Theme (TDV mix) All of which i enjoy listening to when i can.
Again i will say it...Tony De Vit is a legend

What a great man a truely influential figure. I had the great pleasure of djing with the man himself and was also signed to TDV records at the time of his death. It is scarey to think how big a dj he would be today if only he was still alive today. He really was ground breaking in everything he did. He is the only guy i have met in the music industry that put himself out and was even prepared to lose a few quid to help others in the long run. I'm only sorry we didn't get to work together longer and see the finished project. RIP

It's lovely to have found this site. Tony was my Uncle and I was only 6 when he died and it's weird to see how many fans he has got I would just like to say, in the short time that I knew him, he was the nicest, kindest, most generous Uncle anybody could have wished for and I wish I could have had chance to know him better. My Mum tells me loads about him, but I've also learnt alot from this site. I really love his music and I really hope it keeps going. I feel in a way that it keeps his memory alive.

Tony de Vit is my uncle, I found this web page and was very proud that there were so many messages on it I didn't realise that he had so many fans. He was the kindest most gererous person in the world he spoilt me, my brother and sister all the time. Me and my brother were only 7 and 8 when he died and it makes me sad that we will neva get 2 know him properly but my mom tells us all 'bout him. She says that he was the best DJ in the world and listening to his music I think he was!!! It will be 5 yrs on July 2nd since he died and we still miss him loads!!!!!!!!!!

Having only started dj'ing in late 1999, i obviously, and rather sadly missed the era of tony de vit being at the forefront of the club scene. However 4 years on from then, I have now truely discovered the legend that is tony de vit.I can think of no other dance music producer or dj whose sound has,and will continue to stand the test of time, other than tony.To this day his tunes are still rocking the nations's biggest clubs, and they continue to influence immensely the sound that is hard house, the sound pioneered by the great man himself.Look out for remixes from myself of the godfather of hard house's tunes, as as a tribute to the man i feel it only proper that any hard house dj should pay homage to his great work by keeping his tunes where they should be ; tearing the roofs off of clubs worldwide.

ARE YOU ALL READY!?...THIS WAS THE SOUND OF THE MAN WE CAME TO ADORE SO DEARLY..A TRUE PIONEER OF THE "NRG" SOUND THAT WITHIN A NIGHT CHANGED HIS STYLE DRASTICALLY AFTER HIS 1ST VISIT TO TRADE. WHO WILL EVA FORGET TONY'S RELENTLESS MARATHON SETS AT TRADE - AT THE END STILL SMILING LIKE THERE WAS NOTHING BETTER THAT COULD HAPPEN ON EARTH. A TRUE MAESTRO OF THE HARD SOUND AND A MAN OF GREAT TALENTS...NOT JUST MUSICALLY BUT ALSO HE HAD GREAT HUMAN SKILLS! IT IS THAT RECOGNISABLE CHUNKY, BOUNCY, PUMPIN' "HARDSTYLE" OF THE "MAN" THAT BROUGHT ME TO BE THE HARD NRG DJ/PRODUCER I AM TODAY. LONG LIFE THE LEGEND...TDV...LORD OF THE DANCE!

Still, after all this time, I still cant believe Tony isn't with us any more. The tragic death of Johnny "RR" Fierce was another huge blow to the hard house scene in 2001, but it has bounced back with the enthusiasm and vigour that Tony and Johnny would have been proud of. Awesome club nights like goodgreef, sundissential and frantic just show how strong the UK hard dance scene still kicks. I look forward to 2003 with baited breath... C'MON!! :-)

WHat can I say?Tony De Vit was one of the very few djs I started listening to when I first got into the clubbing world. His music, the sound, definitely started what we call 'hardhouse'.Bouncy, energetic and just plain different!!Only wish I had a chance to have seen him play live! One can only dream of living up to his passion..its not everyday one could play mad long hour sets! Its only appropriate that we have a rave in tribute to him every year in London:)

Quite an interesting story of mine. i was into commercial music at the age of 9. My uncle was into the club scene, but i didnt know much about it or the music. One day, he mentioned, that if ever i saw a 'trade' cd, i should take a listen. Waddya know, 2 weeks later, i found, browsing through a cd store, as a 9yr old a kid, i found 'TONY DE VIT - GLOBAL GROOVES'. I didnt listen to it, but bought it anyway. I got home and put it on. All was fine, until i listened to the 9th track. It blew my mind!!!!!!! i was hooked to the music forever. Im now 16, a dj myself, under the insperation of the best dj who lived. I try to get as much cd's and vinyl of him as i can. I owe it to my uncle. theres not much more i can say, but TONY DE VIT rocks!!!!!!!!!

I first discovered Tony when my brother bought his Global Underground Tokyo CD. I was blown away by the flowing, uplifting mix.
What turned Tony on to me was the remixes. He did a lot of phenomenal remixes for the likes of E-Trax, Phunky Phantom, Louise and Hampshire & Wetherby. I loved the remixes. You are greatly missed. The hard house scene is a sad place without you. Peace, Pete.

I remember seeing Tony many years ago, from that first experiance my life had changed. It got to the stage that myself and Tony would often chat, what a great guy. He had so much enthusiasm his sets translated this energy we all know and admired. Tony de Vit rocked every event I went to no matter how small or large. The Lord of Dance, a legend who left a void that no one can ever fill. My own mission to re live those magic momments transpired in 1999,when I decided to give every one a chance to attend The official TdV charity event @ The Arches in Sheffield for two reasons, I first heard Tony play there and also he also had his own night there INDUSTRIA. We rocked it and Ray played a few tunes to keep it de Vit. A year on we tried again, a tribute cd for Wax. No matter how many tribute events that are done, nothing can ever bring him back. Keep hold of those pressious memories and cherish them. Tony what more can I say, I miss you. Rock those heavenly turntables. God be with you mate. Love & Respect Tom

Tony sad loss has left a hole in music that will never be filled. His genious knows no bounds and will never again be matched.
To me Tony was set structure, progression, super skilled mixing, timing and always a f**king top set. Once of the best sets I heard was a couple of months before his passing and very similar to "Live in Tokyo", this was a set with no cheesy top tunes but a set where every track complemented each other and had my glued to the podium throughout the two hours.

I only actually knew that the greatest DJ of all time had died, a couple of months after he had. I was in a restaurant with my bro. We were talkin bout B.I.G and 2pac and then Tony De Vit came into the coversation. I said 'You mean Tony's dead.'My bro couldn't believe I didn't know, in fact he thought I was joking. But now Tony this is my chance to say my tribute.
Tony youwere undoubtedly the nicest, coolest and greatest DJ of all time. 16 hours you have gone, spinning those turntables at Trade. If you were playing the Steve Thomas stuff to the Ian M stuff, you were were still the best.

I was introduced to techno only about a year ago. I love the music, its just so artistic and it has alot of meaning behind every part of the song. My friend collected all of the Global Underground cd's. I borrowed his Tony De Vit in tel aviv cd and made a copy of it and listen to it for like 2 months and i loved it. Then just about 4 months ago i found out that some of the Global Underground artists were comeing to denver and i asked my friend if there was a possibility of Tony De Vit coming too. He sayed no..... Because hes dead.
Tony De Vit was different than most dj's. He could actually listent to his music. He cared about his fans and helped to keep them up. He had a real feel to his music.
So this is my tribute to him. He still lives. He is within all of us. The only thing you can do is remember.

Although I never got to see you play, I appreciate what you did for clubbing and hard house. I bet you're watching from up there (on Sheffield in particular) and thinking "What the f**k?!". ;)

Tony Is "THE" Man and everybody knows it. His hard house is the best hard house, I mean if you hear sets from say BK or Ed Real they really are just BOOM, BOOM they havent got no passion, no feeling and definately got no inspriration, there just created by money grabbing talentless monkeys who are out for what they can get, But Tony on the other hand, (like he said in one interviews) is that hes doing what he wants and thats the way to be! Live long in our Hearts & Minds Tony. Big Up Respect, Alex Gosling.

What can I say about this greta DJ and wonderful person that hasn't been said before. I bought The Dawn a few months back and when I heard it I said I most keep an I out for this fellas next release. About two weeks later I was reading Ministry when I saw "A fav club of Tony de Vits right up to his death". I couldn't believe it. Only when reading the tributes on this page co I realise how much he meant to so many people, and I can garuntee I'll be playing The Dawn at every set I have in future as I now the Man himself will make sure it's sound will bring the house down. I remember being at a party in 1995 when I discovered the unique musical stylings of a Mr Tony De Vit on a tape from Progress & was immediately drawn in by the relentless energy that this reletively unknown DJ was banging out. I had discovered this completely new sound, which became instantly recognisable in his live sets & remixes by the sheer pounding energy. He had a amazing knack of stamping his signature onto everything he mixed but somehow tweeking it just enough to make you question your knowledge of his work.
As with the entire club culture, his death came as a big shock to me, not that I knew him personally but because he seemed to be on the brink of success - BIG TIME sucess - & it felt like both he & we had been robbed of his excellence which far outweighed the likes of Oakenfold, Tong & Sasha. We can only assume thats why the big man upstairs chose to take him.
As clubland continues to rebuild itself after his death - helped by the likes of Fergie, Lisa Lashes, Tidy Trax & Nukleuz - its important to remember Tony as THE pioneer of hard house, the single most influencial member of a now very popular form of dance music - Irreplaceable. I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say he is sadly missed. Rest in peace Tony De Vit

I've only been spinning for 4 months now, and after hearing my friends tell me how huge of an impact Tony Devit left on the scene, I focused on listening to more of his music. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't thank this man for everything he's done, and respect all his hardwork and dedication. He's my Idol; everytime I get up in front of a crowd, the look on peoples faces when I slam down a TDV track is unforgetable. It's pure ecstacy.
You've left a mark with me Tony, and I hope you watch over me as I would for you.

When i first started mixing i really didn't have anyone as a mentor but then i started to buy gu cd's and the one i had was tdv live in tokyo. I have to say the way he chose and played his music was unlike anyone, it is hard, but not too hard, just about centre. The way he mixed his beats was awesome, he really was the guv'nor and still is no-one else will beat him!

It's been a couple of years of self-imposed clubbing exile since the shocking loss of a man truly at the top of his form.
The last time I went out was Tony's memorial in Birmingham.
Two years later I went out in Melbourne, and the last tune was "Are you all ready?"
Clubbing lost the lord of the dance, but as long as we remeber him and play those tunes which still stand up now, we will never forget him.
Rest in Peace mate.

I sympathize with everyone of you out there today who has written their feelings about such a tremendous DJ. The support is tingling. This is the one of the worst feelings I have felt in a long time, and I'm not too sure why yet.... I absolutely fell in love with the music Tony brought to us. TODAY! I vowed I would learn everything about this man and his style, when the first thing I learned built a tremendous brick wall. I envisioned this guy possibly coming to play at a rave in my little city and I got goose bumps. He is the only Dj I have ever showed this much interest in. I mean me! I am the Queen of Hard House and Acid Trance I live for the likes of Van Dyk, Corsten, Sasha, Digweed, Oakenfold, Fontaine.......just to name a couple. Now this man who sparked immense curiosity in myself is nothing but a once was... and can't be a will be....Holy shit why the fuck did this electronic engineer have to be taken from a world that was only beginning to open it's arms to his music. If Tony was still spinning he would undoubtably be the KING of the turntables. Luv ya baby.

Tony, I just want you to know that the biggest regret I have is that I never met you or saw you play. I am only 16 now, and was 14 when you left us, and was therefore unable to come to any club to see you. You are my biggest inspiration, and from the moment I first heard one of your tunes (are you all ready), I knew that your music was the best music to ever hear. I think it speaks for itself as whenever You are in a club and a Dj drops one of your tunes, everyone goes wild, but I am sure that deep down inside, like myself, there is a moment when I think of you and what you have done for the hard house/Nu nrg scene. If I am listening to one of your tunes, it makes me want to create music that makes you feel the same way, but I never want to be better than you. In the same way I never want to be better than my brother. He is Djing now in clubs over the UK and feels the same way about you as me. I hope that some day we meet, by then I hope to have sent a shockwave through the scene, and let everyone know, that your spirit lives on forever. Thankyou! Ben Kouijzer

The world is at a great loss without TdV. Look at what we've been deprived of by his untimely death. We can only imagine what kind of tunes he would have released. But at least he left us ,in my opinion, with his best tune ever...THE DAWN.

Recently purchased GU005 (Tokyo) and GU001 (Tel Aviv). Don't seem to see any other TDV mix albums in the NYC music stores. How do you envision mix perfection in 4 little 5.25" disks? The tracks are intoxicating, and the beat reminds me of my own caffeine addled, insanely paced heartbeats. This music personifies what it means to be alive. If Digweed can intoxicate like a Tequila buzz, Tony can invigorate like shots of adrenaline through a diamond bullet in the brain. I don't think I can survive each day without 2 bottles of Jolt, my laptop, and my mini-system blaring his mix CDs at Volume hovering somewhere between 99-100 on the 1-10 scale. Screw the neighbors. As Mixmag states, "Tony's music celebrates the living". Now put that CD in, get off your ass, and LIVE, DAMMIT! I miss ya, big guy. Never again would your talents be matched. You ARE the DJ. Now lay down that 160bpm bass track and trample my brain into collective consciousness. You would be fondly remembered in our side of the pond.

Well what can I say? This is the first time I have ever used the internet and this is the first page I wanted to find. Like everyone else who has left a note of respect on this page, I loved his style, his music, his way of always playing to what the crowds loved to hear and I miss him. I do not enjoy clubbing as much as I used to. This is not because I am getting old!?! but because there is now no guarantee of me having an excellent night like I ALWAYS did when going to a night where the great man was DJing. Thats it really, thanx tony for years of excellent clubbing and goodbye. If heaven is on the internet please note.......You are greatly missed. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Tony,
I know you will never read this (or will you, from far above us?), but wherever you are now (which must be heaven - everywhere you were was like heaven), carry on with your fine work, give them the mix 'til their ears bleed, like you fulfilled us with spiritual dance music. I'm so sad you passed away, but there still remains the hope that we will meet again, perhaps in a next life...

I FIRST MET TONY IN "TIME FLIES" CARDIFF BACK IN 94, I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER BEING ENTRANCED BY HIS TUNE "BURNING UP" NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY HIS STYLE, BOTH MUSICALLY AND HOW FRIENDLY HE WAS TO HIS AUDIENCE. AFTER MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH HIM I HAD SEEN HIM IN TRADE, ES PARADIS, AMNESIA AND AT MY UNIVERSITY ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. HE'D ALWAYS SAY HELLO AND SIGN AN AUTOGRAPH FOR ME, WHICH SHOWS JUST HOW MUCH HE VALUED HIS AUDIENCE, HE NEVER FELT THAT HE WAS TOO BIG, LIKE SOME DJS. WHEN I HEARD OF HIS DEATH I FELT THAT THE CLUBBING SCENE WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME BECAUSE NOBODY PLAYS WITH SUCH ENERGY AS TONY DID. I HAVENT BEEN TO A PROPER CLUB NOW FOR CLOSE ON A YEAR AND I DO MISS IT BUT WITHOUT TONY, THAT CLUBBING SCENE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.

I first dicovered Trade seven years ago. The music blew my mind but I could only really get into it after about 8am. This was when Tony De Vit would start playing. His skill as a d.j. lifted thousands of people over the world and touched the hearts of many more.
His mixing was perfect, smooth and uplifting. He took the whole crowd on a journey to places that they would never have dreamed of. Tunes would never sound the same after I had heard them being played in one of his sets. His ability to play to different crowds, with different styles from house to nu energy and techno, was a gift that only he has been blessed with.
Thank you Tony, we signed your rememberance book but I know of so many other that never got the chance to say thank you.

Well,
its the start of a new year, a year without you, It is still hard to believe that you have gone, no more seeing a night in mixmag, seeing tony was playing and then quickly phoning round the crew to check that we would be going.
The last time I saw tony was at Sundissential North, I think apart from trade this was the only other club where you could guarantee that most of the people there were there just to see tony, his music and the total bollocks that goes on behind theose doors at sundissential were the perfect match, god how I miss those Sunday afternoons.
I must say that I have not been clubbing since tony died so I can't comment on the current scene, but i am sure there is a big void where he used to be.
I remember sitting in my car on 4th July listeneing to all the tributes from all other DJ's, Tony had no enemys, I dont think that he ever slagged anybody down. I remember as well on World Aids Day there was a programme on tv, to my supprise there was a tribute to him, done by Boy George (which might i add was well done) its a shame that it took his death to get him the recognition he well and truly deserved.
Tony I miss ya music mate, we all miss you, the party is just not the same without you. I know that hopefully when I die there will be this big club in the sky, and there top of the bill will be the second god.......T.D.V.
May you rest in peace.

Truly a genius, a man who would instantly make a club shine. Music that pounded, tunes so solid you could fire them from a gun. Remixes of gold, original tunes of such serious quality, we could only dance around and appreciate that when in the presence of Tony De Vit, we were in the hands of a genius. Very sad that such a tragedy occured - and knowing how brilliant he was - there will be no-one to replace him. No one should try. We should just enjoy his legacy. His tunes. Why you? That was the question myself and all my clubbing mates asked ourselves when we found out you had passed away.
The first Tony DeVit set I heard changed the way I listened to music, it's not just about putting one record on after another, no it's much more than that and thats just what Tony demonstrated.
We tried our best to see him whenever we could, whether he was playing in Liverpool or London. He was awesome and never failed to stun us, believe me i've had many a pulled muscle rocking to Tony!

Tony De Vit.. One sunday afternoon my older brother who was then 15 was banging the sounds of tony remixes out in his room when I admired the theme from S express.
I thought it was brilliant. I was only 9 at the time but it soon changed the style of music in my house.
At the aged of 15 i got my decks and was soon pumping the sounds of trade out of the turntables. Every CD I could find of Tonys I would immeadiatly buy. This has lead to all sorts of mixing by Tony like Kiss anthems to trade volume 1.
It was a majour blow in my family when we heard the sad news of his death. He was the mixmaster and let him rest in peace.
God bless Tony De Vit.

Any info will do Steve use to be a bouncer on the door at The Nightingale back in 1990.

Tony De Vit - WE MISS YOU
It's true that Tony was the greatist House remixer ever.
He remixed some of the greatist tracks i've ever heard such as:
Age of Love - TDV Remix
Kinky - Everybody (TDV Remix)
and his own - I Don't Care
Tony you will be missed by me and you are the number one Dj

From my early days as a regular visitor of 'trade' I did not know who the people were behind the music. It was with the arrival of Tony's 'Burning up' that I found out who Tony was.
Tony's work grew from strength to strength and he was my inspiration to buy decks.
Tony your records and remixes will always have a place in my sets, and your sets will remain some of the best times I had back then at 'trade'.
Rest In Peace, I hope you have found the kind of exhilaration you gave to so many

I remember seeing Tony last year at Frisky at Ministry: he played a storming set from 4:30 - 6:30 back room. The handbag room (bar) finished at 5:30 and people poured into the back room for a last boogie - and immediately turned round and went home when they heard Tony halfway through his usual hard-as-nails set! I also travelled 200 miles very f***ing quickly on the day of my graduation to get to see Tony in Northampton with a bunch of mates who lived there - I have always maintained that he is much better live than on his recordings, although his last couple, namely live in Tokyo for Global Underground, and Elements CD showed a more refined style that I'm sure would have just got better. One of the best tributes was from Pete Tong on the essential mix, when they played a recording from '95 - if anyone wants a copy of this 90 minute set, I'll be happy to supply. Respect Tony!

Like you I was saddened by the death of one of the worlds greatest DJ's, Tony De Vit. I'm glad someone, yourself, has set up a page in his tribute. Like yourself I discovered TDV about seven years ago and he just blew me away with the energy he was able to create through his music.
Like when Elvis, Diana and any other person that had made an impression on my life had died I know exactly where, when and what I was doing when the news was broke to me. Unlike most people who probably found out through news bulletins given out on music radio programmes I was in a chat room on the internet. I was talking to a few people from London and saying how I'd love to go to London, to Trade and hear Tony de Vit play.
This came as a great shock to me. Tony was a young man, he was only 40. This man had achieved so much in such a short lifetime. I am a DJ myself and only 10 years his junior, if I achieve a quarter of what this man has done for the music industry and club scene by the time I am 60 I'll be proud and happy person. I looked up to him, I respected him and to be perfectly blunt and honest I worshipped the ground he walked on and I can say that without feeling any sort of shame. Some people may think that a man of my age shouldn't haven't heros. I can tell you now, everyone has a hero who they follow or are inspired by and Tony De Vit was one of mine. The sounds he made, the style he created, inspired and influenced me and others to how and what we play. Because of him I was able to introduce some of his flare into the discos, yes discos because that what they were and bubble-gum pop nightclubs I worked, with the remixes he made of popular chart music.
I remember one night playing a place where any sort of hard music (what they called RAVE) was a big no, no! I had just played a TDV remix when the owner/manager came flying up to me with an angry look on his face. "What did I tell you about playing that hard, techno music here? They don't like it!" Hence to say the floor was packed and bouncing to the tune. I calmly turned and looked him straight in the eye and said "That's not hard or techno. That's 'Do You Know?' by Michelle Gayle. Do you honestly think Michelle Gayle would make mad RAVE records?" Showing him the sleeve and label. "You're right" he said looking surprised. He smiled and just walked away. So through these TDV remixes I was able to fool managers and club promoters who hated the geared up sounds that he produced and help originate to give me a chance to get away with blue murder in clubs that would normally not allow it.
Tony mate, I've learned so much from you and if there's a heaven you'll be there. If it has a nightclub you'll be DJing in it. I just hope the day I arrive there you'll be playing!
Thanks for everything,
Stevey Walker ( stevey_w@hotmail.com )
